2009 Alfa Romeo MiTo Quadrifoglio Verde

2009 Alfa Romeo MiTo Quadrifoglio Verde

The Alfa Romeo MiTo Quadrifoglio Verde will be powered by a 1.4 MultiAir TBi engine developing 170 hp. The Alfa MiTo Quadrifoglio Verde comes with the 17″ satin titanium-finished wheels which is based on the Alfa Romeo 8C Competizione supercar. The same color is used for the headlight frames and the wing mirrors, while the dark finish of the headlight parabolas is achieved by a brand new metal sublimation technology.

Dynamic Suspension

Competitive racing has always been a testing ground for new technologies, which have found their way from the world’s most famous racetracks to standard road cars. One example of this passage between two seemingly very different worlds is dynamic suspension. This system, which actively and continuously controls the electronic shock absorbers, was developed by combining Alfa Romeo road testing with the latest engineering techniques from Magneti Marelli.

So, using experience gained on the racetrack, the system allows the MiTo Quadrifoglio Verde to excel even further in terms of agility and handling, giving it exceptional driveability and unparalleled safety. The driver gets three benefits from the Dynamic Suspension system: comfort, safety and agility. Above all, the electronic shock absorbers adapt to the road conditions and control all the car’s movements. This guarantees maximum comfort and ensures that the unevenness of road surfaces is fully absorbed. In addition, the Dynamic Suspension system always ensures maximum grip and safety by actively responding to all road conditions. Finally, because roll and pitch are more restricted in all conditions, there is better stability and cornering that adds to the undoubted agility of the Alfa Romeo MiTo.

The suspension interacts perfectly with the three different control strategies of the Alfa DNA system. In “Normal”, agility is combined with a higher level of comfort, whereas in “All Weather”, the safety features are enhanced by continual interaction between the Vehicle Dynamic Control stability system, the steering and the suspension. Finally, in “Dynamic”, the MiTo becomes a true sports car clinging to the ground and fit for any road: it is no coincidence that the system was developed at the historic Balocco test track and round the corners of the Nurburgring. So, thanks to the hard work of Alfa Romeo and Magneti Marelli, the car is responsive and reliable when you turn the steering wheel or put your foot on the accelerator.
The innovative Dynamic Suspension system is made up of four electronically controlled shock absorbers, five accelerometric sensors, a control unit and an interface with Alfa DNA for the different settings and with the other on-board electronic systems.

Its main feature is to actively and continuously control the response of the shock absorbers, which adapt depending on the movement of the car and the road conditions, as well as the driving style. To sum up, the Dynamic Suspension system better protects passengers from uneven road surfaces thanks to an effective filtering and optimises comfort by recognising an obstacle (such as a bump or a hole) and adapting suspension behaviour accordingly. The system also ensures better cornering by altering damping distribution of the four shock absorbers, enhancing handling and hold thanks to advanced lateral dynamic control. What’s more, the Dynamic Suspension system manages longitudinal dynamic control by adjusting the movement of the chassis during acceleration, braking and gear changes, and by integrating perfectly with the Vehicle Dynamic Control, steering and braking systems.

The new six-speed C635 gearbox

The technological qualities of the Alfa Romeo MiTo Quadrifoglio Verde are further enhanced by the next-generation C635 gearbox. Developed by FPT and manufactured at the Verrone factory in Italy, this groundbreaking mechanical unit is the first result of a design philosophy aimed at improving driveability, consumption levels and production flexibility.

As far as driveability is concerned, the new gearbox ensures clean and swift changes with very short selection movements, uniform activation pressures, no noise and no vibrations. In addition, modern design and construction techniques help to significantly reduce consumption levels thanks to less friction and the best possible gear ratios.

Its appearance in the Alfa MiTo 170 hp 1.4 MultiAir TBi marks the debut of a modern family of gearboxes adapted for a broad range of models.

2009 Alfa Romeo Spider

2009 Alfa Romeo Spider

The Spider or convertible has an important place in Alfa Romeo tradition (starting with the Giulietta Spider in the 1950s and going on to the Duetto and the Spider launched in the 1990s), because it has always embodied the ‘free emotive’ expression of the car. And the new model reiterates the same theme, a natural evolution of the convertibles created by Alfa Romeo in its long history, cars that have always produced strong emotions, guaranteeing extremely entertaining driving and combining superb styling with the performance of powerful, elastic engines. And the new Alfa Spider is no exception: it has the same ‘essentially simple’ character of a true sports car, combined with the technological superiority of the ‘new Alfa breed.

Developed by Pininfarina in conjunction with the Alfa Romeo style centre, the model turns heads for its unmistakable Italian elegance, an absolutely unique and unrepeatable style that promises the satisfaction of a sporty drive with full respect for Brand traditions. While maintaining a front end compatible with the latest generation of Alfa Romeos, the new car is nevertheless the latest stylistic development of the Alfa Romeo convertibles that have written the history of world motoring. Take for example the car’s penetrating lines that invite the eye to run over the entire length of the clean-cut perimeter. The side is made more dynamic by the concave surface that runs across it. Brawny wheelarches express the car\’s sporty vocation while maintaining its stylistic elegance and lightness. The rear is also made lighter by fins and the round plan view of the boot and bumpers.

Inside, the Alfa Spider offers a welcoming and highly sophisticated environment due to the use of top-quality materials and the adoption of opulent features (standard on some versions). From dual-zone automatic climate control to steering-wheel-mounted radio controls, VDC and Cruise control, a map navigator with bird-view function and the Blue&Me system.

The car is offered in a choice of two outfits, and the customer can also choose between two JTS petrol engines (2.2 delivering 185 bhp and 3.2 V6 Q4 delivering 260 bhp), combined with a sporty, mechanical, 6-speed gearbox. The new car guarantees the temperament of an Alfa and excellent dynamic performance thanks to high double wishbone suspension at the front and a Multilink system at the rear. The Alfa Spider combines superb comfort with a sporty trim and an evolved ‘Alfa Romeo Q4’ four-wheel drive system (on the 260 bhp 3.2 V6 Q4 version). And in the safety field, the new Alfa Romeo is fitted with the most sophisticated electronic devices to control the car’s dynamic behaviour: from braking to traction.

These are the winning features that allowed the new model to run off with the ‘Cabrio of the Year 2006’ prize at its first outing (at the recent Geneva Motor Show). This prestigious title was awarded by a Cabriolet Committee made up of 23 motoring journalists from 12 different countries. With its safety, power and attractive styling, the Alfa Spider marks step forward in the convertible field, a specific segment where Alfa Romeo has always played a leading role. The new vehicle has been designed for quality without compromise. This concept has been pursued throughout all stages of the car’s development process, from product design and including the innumerable tests that the car underwent before production. The Alfa Spider’s quality is also expressed in the choice of opulent interior materials; in the tuning of its Alfa Romeo engines to achieve top-level performance, engine note and driving comfort – and in the optimisation of the sophisticated suspension systems. The term ‘quality’ also describes a world of financial services and products to meet all needs.

2009 Alfa Romeo Brera

2009 Alfa Romeo Brera

Designed by Giugiaro, the Alfa Brera immediately catches the eye with unmistakeable “Italian elegance” and its absolutely unique, incomparable style, offering sporting performance fully in keeping with Alfa Romeo tradition. The soft, flowing lines and steeply tapering front and rear combine to give the car a very compact appearance. It is also flush with intelligent solutions, such as the large glass roof that makes the cabin wonderfully.

The Alfa Brera comes with a choice of two petrol engines and one diesel. With its 260 bhp, the new 3.2 JTS V6 is the most powerful engine in the entire Alfa Romeo range. And for the first on this type of engine, it adopts the exclusive Twin Phaser system for varying the opening angle of the valves. The 3.2 JTS V6 is also available with the 6-speed Q-Tronic automatic gearbox, for the very best sporting performance.

The Alfa Brera adopts a sophisticated suspension setup with high double wishbones at the front and Multilink at the rear. The braking system has four discs with 4-channel ABS with EBD and Brake Assist. The Alfa Brera also uses the advanced electronic active safety devices: VDC for stability control, ASR to prevent wheel slip, MSR in the event of abrupt downshifts in low grip conditions, and Hill Holder for easier hill starts.

2009 Autodelta J4 3.2 C

2009 Autodelta J4 3.2 C

Autodelta has put back the hands Alfa Romeo 159 and has achieved the J4 3.2 C. English has a tuner coupled with a compressor to intercooler 3.2 JTS V6 engine with 260 hp, thus obtaining an output of 352 hp and maximum torque of 435 Nm addition to technical changes, Autodelta also made structural changes to the 159 which have affected frame, brakes and suspension, and electronic components. In the past, the renowned tuners of Biscione had already introduced the compressor in alpha 159 2.2 JTS, calling J4 2.2 C. Instead, already had versions 3.2 C for sporting Alfa Brera and Spider identified, respectively, by the abbreviations J5 and J6.

2009 Autodelta Brera S 3.2 Compressor

2009 Autodelta Brera S 3.2 Compressor

A recent project between Alfa Romeo UK and long-established motorsport preparation firm Prodrive saw the Brera coupe realised into the limited-edition Brera S 3.2, with the most productive aspect of the project being a weight loss of 100 kg thanks to the use of front-wheel drive rather than the standard Brera V6's Q4 all-wheel drive system. With cosmetic and trim upgrades in addition to suspension changes, the Brera S has become a distinctive new version of this striking car. However, Prodrive didn't tackle the area of the car's performance, and this has led to a flurry of requests from buyers for us to take the "bull by the horns" and complete the overall package.

Reworking the Brera S 3.2 with our supercharging system, the finely-honed result of almost a quarter-century of developing and applying forced induction principles to Alfa Romeos, completely transforms it and turns the Brera S into a high-performance sportscar perfectly in sync with the driver. The Brera S 3.2 ‘Compressore' remains true to our principles - as well as living up to the values of the historic Autodelta brand name - remains a sportscar that is always ready for everyday use in any scenario. We have great experience taming high-powered front-wheel drive Alfa Romeo models, such as the 425 bhp Alfa 147 GTA which we produce (and which has had excellent reviews), so we knew exactly what would be the parameters and objectives of the Brera S 3.2 project. The resulting car uses our tried-and-tested supercharging package with intercooler, drawn from the successful Autodelta J5 3.2 C with a maximum power output of 352 bhp (compared to the Brera S, which retains the standard model's 260 bhp) and a significant hike in peak torque to 435 Nm (compared to 322 Nm for the standard Brera S model). The front-wheel drive nature of the Brera S means that with our performance upgrade, in-gear acceleration is greatly improved, as the Brera S no longer has the power drain of the four-wheel drive system. Traction is further improved by fitting our bespoke mechanical limited slip differential (LSD), which operates in combination with the car's standard electronic Q2 system. The mechanical LSD works in a more natural way (as the Q2 only operates in more extreme driving scenarios by applying the brakes to transfer power to the required corner), and offers the driver much greater feedback, which helps to optimise the ‘fun' experience that is a prerequisite of any Autodelta-refined sportscar. Drivers will appreciate the way our LSD integrates into the Brera to enhance the all-round experience.

The result has been transformational, turning the Brera S into an ultimate product in the finest of Autodelta traditions, a sportscar with dynamic capabilities to match its award-winning looks. While this version remains outside of our comprehensive range, in order to cater for the demand of owners, we have made this upgrade available from our factory and we will present the Brera S 3.2 ‘Compressore' at the MPH09 Motor Show.

To complete the all-round dynamic package of the Brera S, at the request of a number of customers, we have fitted the renowned Autodelta Sportline suspension kit which was developed for the Brera chassis through our exhaustive R&D programme, and has been now optimised for this latest application. The Prodrive suspension promotes excellent performance on smoother surfaces, such as racetracks, but it misses out on providing comfort for everyday use; the Autodelta Sportline suspension kit resolves this issue to offer the owner the best of both worlds. The height-adjustable Autodelta Sportline coilover suspension features specific new spring rates and 40 different firmness adjustment settings that can be quickly and conveniently adjusted by the driver. This means the ride height of the Brera S can now be altered for greater road convenience or to optimise the car in very different driving scenarios, from the requirements of a long-distance family tour, to the daily commute, or the more extreme demands of a trackday.

The MC1 is a fully worked-up design for a mid-engined, V10-powered supercar. Designed for an as-yet-unnamed client, Hilton claims the car could be on the road by 2011.

The MC1 is all about bold forms, an illustration of how swiftly a contemporary designer can use the computer to transfer ideas from paper to 3D model. With a low-slung carbon fibre monocoque body, scissor doors and copious gaping air inlets, the MC1 looks every part the futuristic high performance car.

We're especially taken by the simple graphic treatment at the rear, with vertical brake-lights and central exhaust, detailing that contrasts with the overlapping, fluid surfaces that make up the side and front of the car.

For the designer, time constraints are getting ever tighter, while consumers are becoming more sophisticated and demanding more and more individuality. 'I believe we are going to see more dynamic and sculptural surfaces in the future,' says Hilton, who explains that quality, prestige and brand values will increasingly be executed through the complex interplay of light on curves.

The tough but elegant MC1 might not reinvent the wheel, but it could give a lucky niche manufacturer the chance to muscle in on the top end of the market.

BMW Concept Circa 2015

With a design brief to create the BMW of 2015 by interpreting “the language evolution and the trademark essence in view of the company’s future perspectives,” students from Turin, Italy’s Istituto Europeo di Design came up with some fresh new bodies on which to affix the roundel. The radical designs incorporated such varied themes as relationships and community, African culture and design, and fundamental changes in structure and space. We can’t claim to understand every nuance of these thought provoking designs, but we can certainly pass them on to appreciate on a purely visual level. Click through the gallery above to enjoy.
